The most famous area
recreational spot is probably Block Island. Block Island, an
11-square mile seaside resort 12 miles off the Rhode Island
coast, has been heralded as "one of the last 12 great places in
the Western hemisphere." Its rolling green hills and dramatic
bluffs are reminiscent of Ireland, while its beautifully
Victorian hotels and inns preserve the elegance of a past era.
Long public beaches and 365 freshwater ponds are major attractions
here. The Block Island Nature Conservancy operates a large trail
system on the island, offering walking and hiking paths through
grassy meadows, quiet woods and sandy shores. Washington County is
also home to 19 preserves, various state parks, beaches and forest
areas.
Hope Valley golf courses include Fenner Hill Country Club and Fenner Hill Course with 18 holes
over 6,650 yards with a par of 72, the Lindhbrook Country Club and 18-hole
Lindhbrook Course, and Wood River Golf and Wood River Course, which also offers
18 holes.
